I've had about all I can take of the media circus surrounding the whole "Obama can't win the white working class vote" hype.
And now that Dave "Mudcat" Saunders is back on TV piling on with the criticism of the Obama campaign, there's only one thing left to do to end this self-fulfilling prophecy of the media- hire Saunders and his buddy Steve Jarding and let them win the spin war for the Obama campaign.
Because as this primary devolves into a bitter custody battle over who is more entitled to the Democratic nomination- the one who gets the most votes, delegates and states or the one who can convince the superdelegates that more lost states, more lost money, more lost votes is the necessary formula for being McCain, it's the media spin that is keeping this campaign going.
And it's media spin that will end it.
Mudcat and Steve Jarding are the Appalachin equivalent of street money. And while I support Barack Obama in part because of his integrity and determination to run a new kind of campaign, there are reasons why so many of the old ways, and old strategists, are still being used.
Watch Saunders say essentially what Barack Obama said about "bitter voters" and do it in a way that will reach the much-talked about "white, working class voters":
To be honest, in watching and reading Saunders recent interviews about Obama's support among blue-collar workers, he strikes me as the same type of self-serving pundit that we see so much of in the media. But if giving him an advisory position is going to help win voters, then do it. Flip that media script from "why isn't Barack Obama connecting with white voters" to "Here's how Obama is winning over white voters".
Bring in the "White, working class voters" spin gurus, Obama. Beat Hillary in Indiana and North Carolina with her "own" voters. And end this now.
............
By the way, there is another candidate running who deserves the support of "working class voters"- Louisiana 1st Congressional District candidate and fellow Kossack, Gilda Reed. While we continue to beat the same horse during this endless primary season, let's not forget the down-race candidates who need our help. Gilda has a special election on May 3rd and she needs our help.
So please take a second to help her get the media attention she needs by signing this petition asking for John Edwards to support her campaign. And donate to her here. Barack Obama is going to need all the help he can get in 2009, and Gilda's opponent will vote to continue the war and tax breaks for the wealthy, and continue the Neo-Con assault on this country. A win for Gilda in Louisiana 01 is a win for all of us in the Blue Wave of 2008!
